How it all began

It all began three years ago. After losing my best friend Moby, a French Bulldog, to dementia and cancer, the idea of helping animals was born. I have always loved dogs, and for me, it became impossible to ignore the situation on Crete. Too many dogs were sick, malnourished, or chained up, and I simply couldn’t look away.

During the Covid period, I moved into my grandfather’s house in Argyroupoli. There, I saw how much the animals were suffering. My grandfather’s house became my home and soon a safe place for many animals.

One day, a small box appeared in front of the gate. Inside were two puppies, Dafni and her sister. The garden was large, there was space, and in that moment I knew I had to help.

A turning point came with the arrival of a cat named Bella. She was under the care of the German veterinarians from Tierärztepool and was supposed to be euthanized because of her advanced cancer. When I saw her, I put my finger through the bars of her box, and she began to purr. At that moment I knew she wanted to live. I asked the vets to operate, even though the chances were slim. Bella survived.

Bella and Dafni were the beginning of everything. Bella showed me that anything is possible and that, in the end, everything can turn out well.

From then on, it was Bella, Dafni, and me. We were the first residents of the shelter. Seeing Bella alive and happy again gave me strength and reminded me that every life matters.

The place had once been home to horses, so I started clearing and rebuilding the overgrown area. That was the beginning of the shelter.
Since then, the shelter has continued to grow. I keep finding animals that are sick, scared, and abandoned. Each of them has a story, and here, they are given a new chapter — one filled with hope, care, and love.

I have the space, I have the mentality, it came naturally.

The name AboutaShelter stands for more than just a shelter. It is meant to grow into something bigger, a place with real impact — a space where people and animals come together. One day, it will become a café and community space where visitors can spend time with the dogs, experience their kindness, and maybe even fall in love enough to adopt one.

Everyone who comes here should feel what I feel every day: that these animals are truly special. Because every single one of them is amazing.
