How to adopt?

Adoption is a lifetime commitment. And it's one of the most meaningful things you can do.

When you adopt from aboutashelter, you're not just saving one life – you're giving a dog who's survived abandonment, neglect, or worse a chance at something they've never known: a real home.

But I need to be honest with you: adoption is a big responsibility.

What It Really Means

A dog isn't just for a few months or a few years. It's a commitment for their entire life – which could be 10, 12, even 15 years. They'll need:

  • Daily care and attention
  • Regular veterinary checkups
  • Proper food and exercise
  • Patience, especially in the beginning
  • Love, even on difficult days

Some of our dogs have been through trauma. They might be nervous at first. They might need time to trust and adapt. Some of them were never inside a room. They need training of the easiest things. They might have medical needs or behavioral quirks.

But here's what I've learned: these dogs have an incredible capacity to heal. Given time, patience, and love, they transform. The nervous dog becomes playful. The scared dog learns to trust. The broken dog becomes whole.

The process

Step 1: Submit an Application

Browse our available dogs and fill out the adoption application form. You'll tell us:

  • Which dog you're interested in
  • Your living situation and experience with dogs
  • Why you want to adopt
  • Your contact information
Step 2: Initial Review

I'll review your application to make sure it's a good potential match. Then we'll schedule a conversation – either in person, by phone, or video call.

This is where we get to know each other and discuss:

  • The dog's personality, needs, and history
  • Your expectations and lifestyle
  • Any questions you have about the adoption
Step 3: Meet the Dog

The best option: Come to Argyroupoli

If possible, visit the shelter in person. You'll meet the dog, spend time together, and see how you connect. I'll be there to answer questions and help you understand their personality.

There's no substitute for meeting in person – you'll know if it's the right fit.

If you can't visit in person:
We can arrange video calls so you can "meet" the dog remotely. It's not ideal, but it works.

Step 4: Home Check

Before finalizing the adoption, we need to make sure your home is safe and suitable.

Basic requirements:

  • Safe, secure living environment
  • Access to outdoor space (your own garden, or parks/open areas nearby)
  • Ability to provide proper care, food, and veterinary treatment

How the home check works:

In Germany: My friends Fabian and Julia can visit you in person or conduct a video home check

On Crete: I'll visit personally

Other locations: Video call home check

This isn't about judgment – it's about making sure the dog will be safe and happy.

Step 5: Adoption & Beyond

Once everything is approved, we'll finalize the adoption paperwork and arrange transport (if needed).

After adoption:

  • I'm here if you need support or advice
  • Updates and photos are always welcome
  • These dogs are part of my heart – I want to know they're thriving
